Day 1 – Bar Harbor to Ellsworth 20.00 miles.
And so it begins!! We thought we’d take advantage of having our car and Boyce and Brad here, so we decided to ride unloaded for our first leg and have “the boys”( – as Shawn lovingly refers to them) pick us up and return with the bike back to Bar Harbor. We could have left on Sunday, without riding, but we thought we’d break up the trip a bit.
We started out with the traditional back tire dip into the Atlantic. Photo done – check. Jim’s shoes soaked – check. Then off we went! Shawn shed some tears of joy as we headed out of downtown Baa Harbor – slowly up one of the first of many Maine hills. It was a wet and rainy ride across – actually up and over – Mount Dessert Island. We got very wet on this wet and rainy day, but we rolled into Ellsworth, found a meeting spot and waited for our pick-up. We chose a gas station where we could get some coffee to warm us up. It wasn’t until we walked into the store that we realized we both had left our wallets in the hotel room! (Jim’s flightiness is rubbing off on Shawn!). The cashier, taking pity on us and knowing we didn’t have our wallets, offered us a free cup of coffee. With coffee in hand, the hands were getting warmer!! After the guys showed up, Boyce gave us money to pay for the coffee.
It was a slow ride, but we’ll be happy with just making progress in this slow bike adventure!
Brain side trips:
Mike! Woodward – there’s a realtor on Bar Harbor that likes his first name shouted out (on his signs) – pretty tough to say his name with out yelling.
Pine Heath street – what kind of name is that??
If you’re begging for money for your charity, and someone says “no”, the conversation stops there! No one is looking to debate the value of your burnt out bird sanctuary!!
Dumpster diving behind the Rexall Drugstore.
Talking to Mike, motorcycle mechanic extraordinaire.
Dinner with Jill & Tabitha, a couple of Yoopers & 1 Michigan Tech alumni.
